1. Ditch the face wipes
The UK alone is accountable for 10.8 billion wet wipes and - unknown to oblivious users - 93% of blocked sewage pipes in the UK are down to this pesky product! Last year, sewer build ups in London even reached the size of 11 double-decker buses.
As I'm sure you're aware, there are plenty alternatives for makeup wipes that you could consider using. Not only are alternatives better for the environment, but they often work out cheaper too! A few of these alternatives include:
Remove make up with a cleansing oil (you can checkout ours by clicking here)
- Use reusable makeup wipes (you can checkout ours by clicking here)
2. Buy products that have eco-friendly packaging
Reusable bags are something every eco-friendly shopper takes with them to the supermarket, and it’s about time we bring this ethos into our skincare routines.
All of Care By Jords products are packaged in recyclable materials. We also provide a service where in which you can return all the glass bottles and jars you’ve used. If you have any of our products you can return your empty jars and bottles by clicking here.
You can also get refills for a vast majority of our products which will reduce your carbon foot print.
3. Reduce your water usage
When washing your face, turn off the water tap when you don’t need it. It’s a super simple thing to do but it makes a big difference to water wastage.
4. Look at the products ingredients
Look for brands that use natural and organic ingredients in their formulations which are produced and in an environmentally friendly way.
Similarly, make sure your products do not contain microplastics usually made from polyethylene. These are tiny particles of plastic that have many harmful effects on the environment. They are not recyclable and can go on to pollute oceans and be ingested by marine life, fish and animals.
5. Use multi-purpose products
Reducing the number of products we buy and use means reducing the amount of packaging we consume as well as our waste.
Why not try a lotion you can use on your face body and hair instead of having separate ones for each area. Our Hydrating Face & Body Lotion is fantastic multi-tasker. You can learn more about it by clicking here.
As well as our Nourishing & Cleansing Oil which can be used as a cleanser, makeup remover, shaving oil, hair oil and moisturiser. You can learn more about it by clicking here.
6. Shopping locally
Shipping products creates a lot of waste. Think of all the shipping materials required to ship one product: shipping container, packing paper, receipt, shipping label, tape, etc. That doesn’t even include the transportation for the parcel to reach its destination.
Shopping at your local beauty stores, especially small businesses, is one way to cut back on the emissions and resources required to ship goods from afar.
It’s impossible to make your beauty routine truly “zero-waste” so don’t feel pressured by the unattainable goal of perfection. Start slow if you need.
When you run out of a product, try your best to recycle it. If it’s not sustainably made, consider replacing it with a low-waste alternative from a brand you trust.
Imagine the difference each of us could make if we all made an effort to incorporate just a few of these simple steps into our daily beauty and grooming routines! Do you have any top tips for how you keep your personal care routine sustainable? Let us know in the comments.
